MEMBERSHIP OPTIONS - VTC IS A MEMBERS-ONLY CLUB
1. Volunteer's Membership - FREE but only for qualified volunteers who are serious contributors, active and responsible. You must volunteer first before you can earn credits to attend VTC events. To be considered for a Volunteer's Membership, please send an email to Info AT VancouverTennisClub dotcom and state how you can volunteer or contribute to our club. Due to the high volume of inquiries, only the most qualified applicants will be contacted and approved for a trial Volunteer's Membership.
2. Paid Membership - $200 per year. Valid for 1 year. For example: If you buy a Paid Membership on January 1, 2010 it expires on January 1, 2011. Save time - you don't have to volunteer. Paid Memberships get priority spots to all VTC events.
3. VTC'S Athletic Scholarship - For gifted or advanced level athletes. VTC actively scouts for elite or promising people with a lot of potential to join our club's activities. You are welcome to apply for VTC's Athletic Scholarship if you excel in any activity such as tennis, badminton, ping pong, dancing, and so forth. For example, our VTC member Yasu won the SFU badminton tournament and has a VTC Athletic Scholarship. You must be an advanced level at any sports or athletics to earn this membership option. Do you know someone who is gifted and talented? Recommend them to our club and receive a free 1 year $200 Paid Membership as a reward.
Hi,
2010 is special year for us since our city is hosting the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympics. This is the start of a new decade with Chinese New Year and Valentine's on the same day (February 14th).
Since we're an active sports and social club, I'd like to organize an Olympics-related type of event. We'll be ice skating and listening to free live musical concerts/performances at the new GE Ice Plaza rink at UBC Robson Square. Then we'll go to a cafe for cheesecake/desserts, drinks, a structured language exchange and socializing.
VALENTINE'S DAY AND CHINESE NEW YEAR
I would like to send out early Chinese New Year greetings and catch up with some members that I haven't seen for a while. I am wishing for the God of Fortune and Love to be kind to our VTC members this year. At the same time, I'd like to say that your life is what you make of it. Come out, participate and be active if you want to meet someone or reach certain goals. I've introduced a few friends who ended up getting married. Since it will be Valentine's Day soon, you shouldn't miss out on our VTC event! You might meet someone special.
DEALS AND TIPS FOR THE OLYMPICS
The 2010 Winter Olympics is starting in about a week. I remember attending Expo '86 as it was a really big event for us in Vancouver. Here's a tip for those of you who are thinking about buying Olympics souvenirs or clothing. Cinderella already bought some Olympics clothing a little too early as she didn't know about the sales and deals once the Olympics are over. Don't make the same mistake and have buyer's remorse! ;)
I remember after Expo '86 they had warehouse clearance sales near the current location of Chinatown's Millennium Gate. I bought many Expo 86 shirts and other merchandise for anywhere from 50% to 90% off.
They had clearance sales after the Beijing 2008 Olympics. So if you're looking for a deal and souvenirs of the 2010 Olympics, it would probably be a good idea to wait a bit. :)
AUSTRALIAN OPEN TENNIS
Did anyone else follow the 2010 Australian Open? Roger Federer and Serena Williams won another grand slam. Even though I think Federer is a great player, it's getting too predictable.
I was routing for Justine Henin to make a big comeback and win the women's finals. With the way they're playing, Justine Henin and Serena Williams can probably beat most of the male players. :D
Cheers,

- VTC EVENT DETAILS -
DATE: Saturday, January 30, 2010
TIME: 6:45PM to approximately 10:30pm
LIMITED SPOTS. ***Please RSVP to attend*** Space is limited.
Attendance will be taken. Our 3.0 Points Deduction System will be
STRICTLY enforced due to prevent no-shows or wasted spots.
If you change your mind, please give at least 24 hours notice. You can read the 3.0 Points Deduction system on our official VancouverTennisClub.com web site for more details.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PRIORITY SPOTS FOR PAID MEMBERSHIPS, LONG-TERM VOLUNTEERS AND
CONTRIBUTORS
Volunteers and contributors always get priority spots to all VTC
events. To be fair to volunteers and people waiting ahead in line,
please don't show up without an RSVP (1 point deduction).
ALL LEVELS WELCOME - it doesn't matter if you're a beginner,
intermediate or advanced. Similar levels will be grouped together.
WEATHER PERMITTING (OUTDOOR EVENTS) - as long as the ground is
dry, we're on. If the ground is wet, we'll re-schedule for another
day.
ITEMS TO BRING/EQUIPMENT
Please bring your own racket/sports equipment.
* Healthy Snack to share with our group if it's your first-time as
part of your initiation
* racket
* lots of water
* sunglasses/sunblock when it's sunny
HEALTHY SNACKS POT "LUCK"
First time members should bring a snack as part of their initiation
and introduction. Please let the organizer know at the beginning
of the event whenever you bring snacks so we can share them with all
members of our activity.
Every member who wants to keep their membership in good standing should volunteer, contribute and bring snacks at least once in a while to our club. Bring some healthy snacks so that everyone in our group can share.
Healthy snacks are preferable because our club promotes fitness, health and well-being. Try to avoid bringing oily, overly sweet or salty foods. We prefer healthy and bite-sized, non-messy snacks if possible but anything tasty or fat once in a while is okay. :p
Some ideas and examples of healthy snacks
include yogurt bars, bagels, granola bars, multi-grain crackers,
organic fresh fruits, carrots and so forth.
Any type of snacks that you like or would like to share or introduce
to others about your culture. Eg. If you're Japanese, you can
introduce some good Japanese snacks to our group members. Just bring a
small sample enough for about 12 people to taste test. If everyone
brings a few samples of their favourite snacks, we should all be
re-energized after our intensive exercise!
TRIAL MEMBERS/VOLUNTEERS 3.0 POINTS DEDUCTION SYSTEM - VTC
Policies strictly enforced!
*This doesn't apply to Paid Memberships.
Before our 3.0 Points Deduction System was in place, several people
would RSVP Yes and not show up. During the early days, there was an
event where 12 people RSVPed Yes but only 1 person showed up. That's
why we have this 3.0 Points Deduction System.
Due to limited spots, this prevents spots from being wasted so others who really want to attend can join us. To prevent over-crowding and avoid long waits, our events are limited in spots. Members must RSVP and get a confirmation email to attend VTC events. Attendance is taken during every event.
Deduction Points will be reset to zero every New Year's Day on January
1. For example: If you had 2.5 points deducted on December 31, 2009
you'll start fresh for January 1, 2010 without any points deducted on
your record.
1) 1.5 points deducted if you RSVP Yes and don't show up.
2) 1.0 points deducted if you RSVP Yes and change your mind with less
than 24 hours notice.
3) 1.0 points deducted if you don't
RSVP yet show up at an event without any notice OR if you
said you would volunteer at event and didn't follow through.
Once a total of 3.0 points is deducted, the member will no longer be
in good standing and will be automatically removed from our system.
If you RSVP Yes and don't show up (by responding verbally, through
email or any of our web sites), you will be removed. To be fair to our
dedicated members who RSVP or others on a waiting list, when events
are full please don't budge in line or show up without notice.
People who are inactive for many consecutive months and don't
volunteer in any way will be purged from time to time.
RSVP AND CONFIRMATION OF SPOTS: Due to limited spots, be
courteous to our dedicated club members by honouring your RSVP. If you
change your mind or you're not 100% sure you can make it, update and
finalize your RSVP at least 24 hours before the start of the event.
People who abuse the RSVP system or don't show up will be removed
from our club.
Changing your RSVP to NO less than 24 hours of the event start time is almost as bad as a "no show" because others won't have enough notice and the spot will be wasted. Free up spots for members who really want to join us and are committed to attend.

MISSION
The Vancouver Tennis Club is a non-profit, private club. Our members and volunteers love to play tennis as well as various sports, social, travel and environmental activities. VTC is much more than a tennis club although the core of our group consists of hardcore tennis addicts. Many members love to play tennis for several hours a day whenever possible. We want to create an environment that's fun, affordable, friendly, and convenient for our contributing members to enjoy all of the activities we have year-round.

COSTS OF RUNNING AND MAINTAINING THIS CLUB - PLEASE CHIP IN
Derin the VTC organizer has volunteered hundreds of hours
(and counting) to run this club, several
thousand dollars of his own money, 4 badminton rackets, 1 outdoors badminton
net, 10 shuttles, 1 tennis racket, 30 tennis balls, 1 ping pong
racket, 5 ping pong balls, 10 foosballs, 1 basketball, paying for all
the web site hosting, advertising, recruiting new members, snacks, computer equipment, office supplies and so forth.
I've volunteered and contributed much of my own time, money, resources
and effort to run this club. Our club requires sporting equipment
investments (which can be costly) and extra resources compared to
other types of organizations.
I volunteer and donate to our club so members who
don't have equipment or cannot afford it can also join us and not be
left out because of financial barriers. I will be buying more
equipment and things to share with our group members as it grows.
In order to organize and run our sports and social events, much time,
energy, effort and money/costs are involved such as the following:
- Web hosting, hardware, software, creating new content, system
maintenance/administration, correspondence
- Sports equipment costs and maintenance. A decent or good
tennis racket costs between $50 to $350 each. A good badminton racket costs
$30 to $250 each.
Table tennis/ping pong
rackets cost $20 to $150 each. Ping pong racket rubbers also need to
be replaced after playing for a while. Decent ones cost between
$30-$60 for each piece of rubber.
Racket strings need to be re-strung after a while of playing because
they get loose. It costs $20 to $40 average for new string
materials. Stringing technicians usually charge around $20 to
$30 for racket re-stringing labour each time.
- Balls/shuttles get lost, worn out or damaged and need to be replaced
regularly. 3 new balls cost $3 to $5 average.
- Time required for promoting, correspondence, making preparations,
set up/take-down, research, making reservations, etc. for our various
sports and social activities.
- Print-outs, informational pamphlets, cards, banners, flag holders,
office supplies (printer toners, ink cartridges, paper)
VOLUNTEERING, RESOURCES AND DONATIONS
We need dedicated, responsible people who can volunteer to
help this group in preparation for events, set-up, take-down and so
forth.
Donations of all types are helpful. If you have any equipment that our
club could use, you could donate it to be used and shared with members
of our club.
Otherwise, you can donate money to help cover our costs and expenses
in running this club. Every little bit helps. Tell your friends about
us. Help us promote our club.
Many resources and costs are required to keep our activities running
so that members can enjoy playing sports, meeting new friends and have
a good time. Please consider donating or volunteering to keep our club
running.
Thank you to all contributors of the Vancouver Tennis Club. It's
appreciated. If you have any feedback or
questions, please feel free to contact us.
CURRENT TASKS AND WANTED ITEMS - YOUR CHANCE TO VOLUNTEER AND CONTRIBUTE
Please contact the VTC organizer (email: info AT Vancouver Tennis Club
dotcom) if you would like to
volunteer, donate, sponsor us or help out in any way.
- We always welcome any type of sports equipment such as tennis balls, shuttles, rackets (even ones with broken strings - we can get them re-strung), badminton and volleyball nets. If someone has some that they don't use or want to donate to our club, it's always welcome and appreciated.
- Developing the VancouverTennisClub.com web site into a large, informative, active and useful web site.
- Extra hands to help organize a VTC members tennis tournament (we need scorekeepers, line judges, and general volunteers to help with everything).
- Extra data center rack space sponsors. Preferably a local company in Vancouver where we can go and work on the equipment. If you or your company has extra data center rack space, hardware or bandwidth to sponsor our club.
- Software developers, help us develop code, work on our web site, back-end, beta-test, debug or do more technical things. We're especially looking for a team of people who are proficient at PHP, SQL, Apache, Linux, Java, Flash, etc. to add new features and keep everything running smoothly. We also have connections to various people and companies for jobs. Volunteer to help us and we'll likely return the favour in some way or put in a good recommendation.
- Graphics designers, we need some new VTC logos and graphics. You
will get credit and publicity for the graphics you design for us. We
need these for our web site, shirts and other club prizes.
- Sports Equipment. If you have any sports equipment that you no
longer use, you can donate it to our club. For example, a racket in
good condition could be donated to our club to share with members who
don't have their own racket or who cannot afford one.
Balls could be donated for practice or to replace lost/worn out ones
or if someone forgot to bring them. If you buy new balls and are
thinking of tossing your old ones, donate it to our club. These could
be used by members to practice their serves.
- Teachers/instructors. If you can teach a beginner to play or an
intermediate to improve their game, consider donating your time to
help others learn and improve.
- Cooking/Food. If you enjoy cooking, you can help us cook or prepare
food when we have food-related activities such as BBQs, parties,
dinners, etc.
- Storage space. We might need some storage space from members who
live near the tennis courts to store some extra sports equipment or
balls in case we need more equipment for members who want to play.
If you have any special skills, resources, connections or something you
want to share or contribute, please contact us or send your comments.
We're always open to suggestions, new ideas and your offers to help us
in any way. Anything big or small would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your support.
CONTRIBUTIONS, PITCHING IN, THANK YOU AND CREDITS
Everyone is expected to pitch in and contribute to our club. This is your chance to earn and keep a membership. At each event, everyone who attends should make themselves useful and help out in some way.
